Plane crash kills all 62 passengers in Brazil
The cause of the accident that claimed the lives of all 62 passenger is still unknown.
58 passengers and four crew members were killed in a commercial airliner plane crash on Friday leaving no survivors, local authorities announced.
The accident involving the plane, identified as Voepass flight 2283, occurred near a home in the northwest of Brazil's capital in Vinhedo, Secretary of Security Osmir Cruz reported, highlighting there were no injuries on the ground. According to local media outlets, the crash took place at around 1.28 pm local time (1628 GMT) in the Capela neighborhood.
The aircraft, which was bound for Sao Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport from the city of Cascavel in Parana state, lost approximately 4,000 meters in altitude within one minute, Flightradar reported.
Fire departments, military police, and civil protection units were deployed at the scene, with hospitals in Vinhedo and the neighboring city of Valinhos mobilized to treat potential injuries.
The cause of the accident is still unknown, Brazilian airline Voepass Linhas Aereas said in a statement, adding that "Voepass used all means to support those involved."
President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva called for a moment of silence for the 62 victims at an event. The Brazilian leader posted a video on X stating, "Very sad news. All my solidarity with the families and friends of the victims." Lula later wrote another post on the social media platform, declaring a three-day mourning period.
