The Prisoners' Information Office confirmed that cancer-stricken Palestinian prisoner Walid Daqqa will undergo surgery on Wednesday in the "Barzilai" hospital to extract a part of his lung as a result of severe infection and contamination.

In a statement, the Office said Daqqa will undergo surgery after his health condition deteriorated.

A few days ago, the prisoner's wife, Sanaa Salameh, said, after visiting him for only a quarter of an hour, that her husband was still in critical condition.

Daqqa's wife pointed out that it was difficult for the Palestinian prisoner to talk because of his respiratory condition, adding that the doctor confirmed to the family the seriousness of Daqqa's respiratory condition in particular.

In late March, the Palestinian Commission for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs warned of the serious health condition of Daqqa, who has been detained for 38 years.

The prisoner's family had appealed to everyone to "take immediate action to save his life and not let him struggle with death inside the occupation cells, as happened with martyr Nasser Abu Hamid."

It is noteworthy that Daqqa has been detained since 1986 and was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of resisting the Israeli occupation. His sentence was later decreased to 37 years. In 2018, two years were added to his sentence.

A few years ago, Daqqa's wife was able to give birth to their daughter, Milad, after smuggling the prisoner's sperm from prison.

Last December, the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs confirmed through its lawyer, Karim Ajwa, that Palestinian prisoner Zakaria Al-Zubaidi, one of the heroes of the Freedom Tunnel Operation, submitted an urgent request to the occupation prison administration to donate his bone marrow to cancer-stricken prisoner Walid Daqqa.
