Pro-Palestine, anti-NATO political party newly formed in Italy
The political party, named 'Movimento Indipendenza' or 'Indipendenza', elected Gianni Alemanno as the party's National Secretary.

Italian news outlets on Tuesday reported the establishment of a new political party in Rome, on Sunday, which openly expresses support for the Palestinian cause.
The political party, named 'Movimento Indipendenza' or 'Indipendenza', elected Gianni Alemanno as the party's National Secretary.
During a ceremony on Sunday, the party outlined its opposition to domestic fascism, US influence on Italian decision-making, and NATO's policies globally, including support for Ukraine.

"I am proud to have been elected as the National Secretary of the Independence Movement. Alongside me is Massimo Arlechino, the national president. Here are the deputy secretaries: Marcello Taglialatela as vice-secretary, Simone Di Stefano, Chicco Costini, Luigia Passaro, and Nicola Colosimo," Alemanno tweeted on Sunday.

One of the party's leaders Rosario Del Biorio said "Independence does not only mean independence of the Italian people who have lived since the end of World War II under the guardianship of the powers that emerged from this war, but also the independence of all peoples living in difficult conditions, including the Palestinian people who are currently going through a very challenging phase."
He further emphasized that the party expresses support for Palestinians with the right to their own State.

On the day of the party's ceremonial inauguration, the party members were seen wearing the Palestinian koufiyyeh.

Under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Italy was among the first coutries to announce support for "Israel" in its war on Gaza.
Because of this, several protests have ensued across Italy as citizens refuse complicity in Israeli war crimes.
