Republican Glenn Youngkin Wins Virginia's Governor Race
Democrats lost the Virginia governor’s race which is considered the most closely watched election since US President Joe Biden's first year in office.
Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin won the Virginia governor’s race early Wednesday, according to local TV channels.
Pro-Trump candidate Glenn Youngkin was 2.7 points ahead of Democrat Terry McAuliffe, with more than 95 percent of the vote counted, prompting NBC, and ABC to call the election for the Republican.
"All right Virginia -- we won this thing! How much fun!" Youngkin commented on the results.
Calling his victory a "defining moment," he added: "Together, we will change the trajectory of this commonwealth. And friends, we are going to start that transformation on day one."
Virginia's race was one of the country's first major statewide elections since Biden took office during which Democrat Terry McAuliffe, 64, faced a challenge from Pro-Trump Republican Glenn Youngkin, 54.
The Race
Early voting in Virginia's governor's race between McAuliffe and Youngkin set a new high.
At least 1,137,656 voters cast early ballots, accounting for roughly one-fifth of the state's 5.9 million registered voters, according to CNBC.
The number of people who voted early in this year's election is nearly six times higher than it was in 2017.
What did Biden Say?
Biden brought domestic political issues to the COP26 climate conference. The US president presented an embracing, optimistic forecast when asked about the Virginia governor’s race. “We’re going to win,” he said, just hours before Republican Glenn Youngkin won over Terry McAuliffe.
A few days prior to the elections, Biden appeared at Grassroots Event with Terry McAuliffe.
During the event, Biden stated that “Today’s Republican Party stands for nothing but just keep cutting taxes for the wealthy and the most powerful corporations.”
“You’ve made this progress because you’ve had the courage and wisdom to reject the very extremism that has taken over the Republican Party all across America,” he added.
Prior to Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former US President Obama and first Lady Jill Biden became the latest high-profile Democrats to campaign in Virginia alongside Terry McAuliffe.
Since the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden has seen an erosion in support. Adding insult to injury, the president’s promises to quickly eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic have fallen short, prompting the White House to take binding measures that have widened the country's divisions over-vaccination or other health measures.
Biden’s Trump-like Approval Ratings
Only 9 months into his presidency, US President Joe Biden's approval continues slipping. Fifty-four percent of Americans disapprove of the incumbent President’s performance, according to a new NBC poll.
