Citing several sources, a CNN report tells that House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is working to quickly secure enough votes in his party to make him the speaker of the lower chamber.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is working to quickly secure enough votes in his party to make him the speaker of the lower chamber in the next term of Congress, CNN reported on Wednesday citing multiple sources.
Following Tuesday's midterm elections, Republicans are projected to win a majority in the House of Representatives.
The report said that about two dozen members of the Republican House Freedom Caucus would prevent McCarthy from becoming the majority leader.
The Minority Leader will need to secure at least 218 votes to become speaker before a full House vote in January. He will be replacing Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
More than 100 Republicans won midterm elections today, winning seats in Congress and crucial statewide offices.
During the day, the struggle for power was getting tighter, with the balance of the House and Senate coming down to a handful of critical states. Ballots were being counted across the United States, and the results could have a significant impact on the political landscape as Republicans attempt to steal control of Congress from President Biden's Democrats.
The results of the midterm elections are expected to bring in a period of split governance in Washington amid a mounting economic crisis.
Biden believes Democrats will win the Senate
Biden predicted that the Democratic Party will have majority control in the Senate.
Biden made his grand prediction while departing for a flight on Marine One with Jill Biden, his wife.
A reporter asked how he was feeling, to which he responded: “Well, I’m feeling — I’m optimistic,” Biden replied. “But I’m always optimistic.”
"Can Democrats win the House?" one reporter asked. "I think it’s going to be tough, but I think we can,” Biden replied. “I think we’ll win the Senate. I think the House is tougher."
