Republicans brandish immigration sword in the face of Biden
The DHS official faces serious allegations, including the misappropriation of taxpayer funds and negligence in adhering to border security protocols.
Punchbowl News reported on Wednesday that the chair of the US House Homeland Security Committee announced the committee is set to launch its inaugural impeachment hearing concerning Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on January 10.
"Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas’ decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress, and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability," said Committee Chair Mark Green in a statement to Punchbowl, referring to the ongoing US-Mexico border crisis.
Green emphasized that the committee's inquiry, which concluded in December, uncovered substantial evidence that justifies the impeachment of the DHS Secretary.

Mayorkas faces serious allegations, including the misappropriation of taxpayer funds and negligence in adhering to border security protocols.
These impeachment proceedings align with a surge in migrant arrivals at the southern US border. The month of December witnessed a record-high 302,000 migrant encounters, as reported by Fox News.
Shortly after the announcement on the impeachment proceedings was made, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stated on Wednesday that President Joe Biden maintains "full confidence" in Mayorkas. Jean-Pierre deemed the attempts by House Republicans to impeach Mayorkas as groundless and regrettable during a press briefing.
"Absolutely, the president has confidence in the secretary," Jean-Pierre affirmed, adding that there is no time for such endeavors at present.
