Russia and Venezuela have agreed on a strategic partnership and cooperation deal, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday.
In a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro via video conference, the Russian president expressed pleasure that a "strategic partnership and cooperation agreement has been fully agreed upon, which will create a good, solid foundation for further expansion of multifaceted ties in the long term. It could be signed during your visit to Russia at a time convenient for you."
Russia-Venezuela ties are based on friendship, trust, and concern for each other's interests, according to Putin, who also noted that both nations hold similar viewpoints on many international problems.
Both nations strive for a more equitable international order and uphold the ideas of sovereign equality, Russia's president emphasized.
"Russia and Venezuela have similar positions on many issues on the international agenda. Together, we strive to create a more just world order, promote the principles of sovereign equality of states, and mutually beneficial cooperation without external interference in internal affairs," he explained.
Putin stated that both nations stand against any expressions of neo-Nazism and neocolonialism.
On his part, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said the two countries had taken their ties "to the highest level in several domains," including energy cooperation.
The Russian president also invited the Venezuelan leader to Moscow to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, noting he would be "happy" to see Maduro on "May 9, the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War."
Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov revealed that both leaders would discuss a variety of bilateral issues over the phone.
"A very wide range of bilateral relations [between Russia and Venezuela,] which, in addition to some ceremonial and memorial things, will also be touched upon today," Peskov shared with reporters.
