Russia adds 154 Members of UK House of Lords to travel ban list
As the world continues to tighten sanctions against Russia and its officials, Russia responds on the basis of reciprocity.
On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared that 154 members of the United Kingdom House of Lords were banned from traveling to Russia in response to London’s decision to bar Russian lawmakers from entering the United Kingdom.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry declares that "in response to the UK government's decision, made in March, to include almost the entire composition of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on the sanctions list, on the basis of reciprocity, [the ministry] imposes personal restrictions on 154 members of the House of Lords of the British Parliament."
This would not be the first time where Russia treats foreign officials and diplomats with reciprocity. Earlier in May, 963 leading Americans, including US President Joe Biden and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, as well as 26 more prominent Canadians, including Sophie Trudeau, the wife of the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, were banned from entering Russia.
Moreover, also in May, Moscow expelled 87 diplomats in a retaliatory move against the expulsion of Russian diplomats from across Europe.
