Russia defending itself against massive Western information war: Shoigu
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu talks about the information wars being waged against his country "on all fronts".
Russia is fending off massive information wars waged "on all fronts" in the modern information space, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a documentary released Sunday by Russia's Zvezda TV network.
"That is the time we live in. Today, it is not just about the way information is presented; it is about a big - I am not afraid of this word - war. An information war that is waged on all fronts," he asserted.
"We have no right to lose in this war," Shoigu said in the documentary dedicated to the Russian defense ministry's Department of Information and Mass Communications.
Shoigu also highlighted the enormous amount of information weapons used against the Ministry of Defense - from fake news to full-fledged information attacks.
Shoigu had described the intentional military-political situation as difficult in September, citing the increase in NATO activities, the degradation of arms control systems, and the intensification of the terrorist threat.
Just two days ago, Shoigu spoke with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin over the phone, and the two parties discussed risk reduction near Ukraine's borders.
The two nations have been head to head over Ukraine, with the west accusing Russia of intending to invade its neighbor while Moscow denies such claims.
The two sides will be holding talks in Geneva on Sunday in light of the tension, and hours ahead of those talks, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia had the choice between dialogue and confrontation.
Moscow's Foreign Intelligence Service accused the US State Department of spreading false information about the alleged troop buildup.
