Russia to develop cooperation with Burkina Faso, reopen embassy
The Russian President announces plans to reopen the Russian Embassy in the West African nation.
In a meeting with the president of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traore, the Russian President expressed his belief that the reopening of the Russian embassy in Burkina Faso will improve cooperation between the two nations.
Putin expressed that Russia attaches "great importance to the development of relations with Burkina Faso. In particular, we have decided to reopen the Russian embassy, which was closed back in 1992."
The Russian leader stressed that he was "sure that the work of the Russian embassy will give an additional impetus to the development of our relations, emphasizing to Traore that Russia knows that the people of Burkina Faso "treat Russia with sympathy and interest. Dear Mr. President, I saw this and heard it from you in your speech yesterday."
In terms of scholarships to Burkina Faso, Putin told Traore that "Moscow will continue to assist Burkina Faso in training of national personnel in civilian occupations in Russia," adding that "in 2023/24 academic year, 10 state scholarships were allocated for Burkina Faso."
Putin pledged to increase that number if Traore was interested.
The Russian President stated at the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg that the operations of the Russian embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea will be restarted soon after a long vacation.
Yesterday, TASS spoke to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov, who stated that everything was ready to open the diplomatic missions, as well as opening embassies in South Sudan and a consulate general in Benghazi, Libya.
