Russia Yet to Recognize Taliban, Closely Monitors Developments
As the Taliban now control most of Afghanistan, Russia is closely monitoring the movement's actions, ensuring security and order in the country.
Press Secretary to the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, said Thursday that before recognizing the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan, Moscow must closely monitor what the Taliban's next steps will be in terms of ensuring order and security in the country.
"Russia has not yet recognized the Taliban. Russia, as we have already said, is very closely monitoring the development of the situation," Peskov said, adding that Russia believes the Taliban coming to power and taking control of most of Afghan territory is a de facto accomplished process.
Russia also believes that "It will be necessary to very carefully monitor what the next steps of Taliban will be in terms of ensuring order, ensuring security, first of all, for the citizens of the country."
Peskov asserted that it is also necessary to ensure the security of its diplomats and employees of diplomatic missions.
He added that Moscow wants to see peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Responding to a question regarding the contacts between Russia and the United States on the situation in Afghanistan, Peskov said contacts will be made when necessary, declaring that a mechanism is already in place regarding the exchange of information on the situation there.
According to press secretary Peskov, the situation requires an exchange of perspectives and information. Therefore, contacts will remain in place between the two countries one way or another. Russia will be monitoring the Taliban's movements to ensure security and order in Afghanistan before recognizing the Taliban's rule.
