Russian embassy requests Latvian police to probe on suspicious parcel
After prompt examination of the contents, the parcel was sent to a lab for further inspection at 19:00 GMT on Wendesday.
The Russian Embassy in Riga called Latvian authorities on Wednesday to investigate a suspicious package it received containing unknown substances, Latvian news outlet LSM reported.
After a prompt examination of the contents, the parcel was sent to a lab for further inspection at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday.
"At 1:34 p.m. [11:34 GMT] a call was received about the fact that the Russian embassy had possibly received a suspicious parcel containing an unknown substance. Officers of the police and other operative services are deployed to the scene for checks," Latvian Police Spokesperson Simona Gravite said via radio on Wednesday.
The Russian Embassy told reporters it could not comment on the matter at present.
As lab results are currently pending, the Latvian police said it launched an inquiry into the matter, according to reports.
In September last year, Russia simplified the procedure for those wishing to obtain Russian citizenship after the President of Latvia Egils Levits said in July 2022 that Latvian citizens who support the special operation in Ukraine may be deprived of their Latvian nationality.
