South Korea's Constitutional Court announced on Thursday that it will deliver its decision on Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's impeachment on March 24, following his suspension as acting president last year.
The court’s ruling on whether to remove Han from office or reinstate him will be closely watched, as it comes just before a key impeachment ruling regarding suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The Constitutional Court has not yet set a date for its decision on whether to uphold Yoon’s impeachment or restore his presidential powers.
Han was impeached as acting president by South Korea's parliament over two months ago during the country’s worst political crisis in decades. Han assumed the role after President Yoon was impeached due to his brief declaration of martial law last year.
Han’s tenure as acting president lasted less than two weeks, and he was impeached on December 27 after a conflict with the opposition-led parliament over his refusal to appoint three additional justices to the Constitutional Court. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok then stepped in as acting president while the cases of Yoon and Han were placed under review by the Constitutional Court.
It is worth noting that the impeached President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, was released from detention last Saturday under technical and legal grounds but remains under investigation over his declaration of martial law.
