South Korea's End-of War Declaration Supported by Beijing
Yang Jiechi, a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, says China supports South Korea's end-of-war declaration on the 1950-1953 Korean war.
Yang Jiechi, a Chinese member of the politburo, has expressed support for South Korea's willingness to declare the official end of the 1950-1953 Korean war.
Yang was quoted by the Yonhap News Agency that "[We] support the push for the end-of-war declaration and believe that the end-of-war declaration will contribute to promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula."
A senior South Korean official told the agency that Yang spoke with the Director of National Security in Seoul, Suh Hoon, and ensured him that Beijing aspires to play a more "constructive role" in the future in similar matters.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in suggested to the UN in September that North and South Korea, along with the US and China, join forces and declare the Korean War effectively over.
The US and South Korea, according to reports issued in November, have initiated negotiations on the content of the declaration and have agreed on a common framework.
