Southern Syria witnessed an escalation overnight Tuesday-Wednesday, with Israeli airstrikes targeting military sites around Sweida and Daraa. This coincided with unprecedented internal tensions between the transitional government in Damascus and the authorities in Jabal al-Arab.
Local sources reported to Al Mayadeen that Israeli occupation aircraft launched a series of raids targeting supply lines for military factions affiliated with the Syrian transitional Ministry of Defense, outside the city of Sweida and in the vicinity of Daraa province.
The sources stated that the Thaala military airport was among the direct targets, and the raids resulted in deaths and injuries among the forces stationed there.
Sources also reported that two airstrikes targeted the 52nd Brigade east of Daraa, hitting positions and gatherings of armed factions affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Ministry of Defense.
Amid the ongoing tensions in Sweida, in a statement issued early Monday, the influential Rejal al-Karamah (Men of Dignity) movement, the most prominent Druze group in Sweida, placed direct blame on the Syrian government for the deterioration of security in the governorate. The group warned that the current unrest "threatens civil peace and paves the way for chaos."
The movement emphasized that the roots of the crisis lie in "the deliberate absence of the state's role in securing the vital road" connecting Damascus to Sweida and the government's continued disregard for repeated violations and assaults against civilians along this route.
Efforts are reportedly underway among local elders and community leaders to contain the violence and de-escalate the situation.
Syria condemns deadly Israeli airstrikes on Sweida
The Syrian interim presidency issued a statement on Tuesday calling on all civilian and military institutions in the country to prevent any "form of violations or abuses, regardless of the pretext."
The statement came in the wake of a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting several locations in Syria, including the southern province of Sweida. The attacks resulted in casualties among both military personnel and civilians.
In a separate statement, the Syrian interim Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the Israeli aggression, stating that the strikes led to the martyrdom of members of the Syrian armed forces, security personnel, and civilians.

The ministry reaffirmed Syria’s legitimate right to defend its territory using all means permitted under international law and urged the United Nations, the UN Security Council, and the international community to condemn the Israeli occupation’s repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty.
According to local sources and Syrian state television, Israeli warplanes launched air raids on multiple areas in Sweida province. One of the strikes reportedly hit the western entrance to the city of Sweida.
A spokesperson for the Israeli occupation forces confirmed the attack, stating that the military had targeted armored vehicles belonging to the Syrian army, including tanks, personnel carriers, and mobile artillery units. He claimed the operation was conducted under direct orders from the political leadership, with the intent to disrupt Syrian troop movements in the area.
