Sudan Rejects "Israel" African Union Observer Status
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry announced its rejection of the African Union commission granting "Israel" observer status.
The African Union commission granted "Israel" observer status in the AU without consulting the bloc's member states, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said, prompting rejection and objections from Khartum.
"This decision caused disagreements between the commission and the member states," the foreign ministry explained.
Khartum denounced AU's decision, saying it was unacceptable and contradicts the core values of the African Union.
Sudan's Foreign Minister Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi did not attend the 39th session of the African Union's executive council due to national commitments. However, Israeli media reported that al-Mahdi did not attend the session due to her stance on the relationship between "Israel" and the African bloc.
The African Union's Executive Council discussed granting "Israel" observer status in the continental organization. The final decision will be announced Friday, and it will either see the African bloc freezing the decision or canceling it.
Seven Arab states had informed the AU of their objection of granting "Israel" observer status - a decision five other Arab states and the Arab League backed.
On July 22, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that the Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia, Alelil Admasu, presented the documents for the observer status.
