Sudan's Dismissed Prime Minister Returned Home
A military official, who asked not to be named, says dismissed Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been returned to his home in Khartoum.
Sudan's dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been returned to his home a day after a military coup, a military source said on Tuesday.
"The prime minister has been accompanied back to his own home in Kafouri district and security measures have been put in place around the perimeter of his home," the source, who requested anonymity, told AFP.
Earlier, Leader of the Sudanese armed forces General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced that Hamdok was in the commander's home and in good health, and assured that the Prime Minister would return home either today or tomorrow "as soon as the present threats are gone."
On Monday, al-Burhan declared a state of emergency, announced the dissolution of the Sovereign Council and the government, and called for elections in July 2023.
Unidentified military forces arrested Hamdok and several ministers and members of the Sovereign Council.
He mentioned that the army will continue the "democratic transition until power is handed over to an elected civilian government," noting that there's a need for the army to protect the security and safety of the country as stipulated in the constitution.
