Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani expresses hope that Arab countries will engage with the country's new authorities promptly in order to be able to fulfill their responsibilities.
Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani expressed hope that the Arab League would support the will of the Syrian people and facilitate Syria’s swift return to the bloc.
During a joint press conference with Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki in Damascus on Saturday, al-Shibani stated that the new Syrian administration is working to create a conducive environment for the dignified return of all Syrians to the country.
He also revealed that the new Syrian authorities aim to hold a national conference that brings together all components of the Syrian people.
Al-Shibani expressed hope that Arab countries will engage with the country's new authorities promptly in order to be able to fulfill their responsibilities, urging these nations to contribute to reconstruction efforts, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
On his part, Zaki emphasized that the sanctions imposed on Syria are no longer justifiable, noting that Syria is a pivotal country, and developments there have a direct impact on Arab states.
Arab League Assistant Secretary-General indicated that the bloc was working with member states to activate Syria's participation.
It is worth noting that in early May 2023, Syria regained its seat in the Arab League after more than 12 years of suspended membership.
Syria's al-Sharaa, UAE president discuss boosting bilateral ties
On Friday, the leader of Syria's new administration Ahmad al-Sharaa and UAE President Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan held discussions to explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, their phone call emphasized "the importance of continuous coordination to support the Syrian people, protect its territorial integrity, and joint action to achieve stability and development in the region."
The UAE’s state news agency WAM reported that Sheikh Muhammad reaffirmed his nation’s “firm position in supporting Syria’s independence and sovereignty over its entire territory.”
Recent weeks have seen a surge in diplomatic engagements with Syria's new administration. Multiple Arab, European, and international delegations have visited Damascus following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
Al-Shibani made a landmark visit to Abu Dhabi earlier this month, marking the first high-level trip to the Gulf nation since the fall of al-Assad.
