Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad lauded, after a meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria’s proactive efforts to back Syria. The Minister praised Algeria for its bold stances when it chaired the Arab Summit.
Al-Miqdad described the two countries’ relationship as inseparable, while Tebboune affirmed that his country "will not abandon Syria, whatever the circumstances may be.”
The Syrian official emphasized shared efforts between the two Arab countries to achieve Palestinian reunification through the Algiers Agreement, which the Palestinian factions agreed to in Algeria in October 2022.
Al-Miqdad pointed to the mutual support shared between Algeria and Syria, and said, "Algeria’s leadership and people stood by Syria in its crisis, just as we supported Algeria in 'The Black Decade'; we struggled against terrorism and colonialism together."
Furthermore, Algeria aided Damascus after a horrific earthquake hit the country in February to al-Miqdad; this highlighted the strength of the historical relations between the two countries, which according to the Syrian top diplomat dates back to the era of Prince Abdul Qadir.
He then expressed respect for the common values shared by the two countries, adding, "We are enlightened by the Algerian positions, especially with regard to joint Arab action...We are in the country of a million martyrs, learning lessons in the struggle [against imperialism]."
Syria looks to be reintegrated into the Arab League
It is worth noting that the top Syrian diplomat arrived on Saturday in Algeria on an official visit to hold talks with the Algerian leadership. The aim of the trip to the country is to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss the latest developments in the Arab world and at the international level. The meetings are expected to further coordination between the two countries on multiple issues.
Al-Miqdad's trip to Algeria comes in line with a series of visits to Arab countries. Previously the Minister headed to Saudi Arabia, which is the first visit of a Syrian Foreign Minister to the country in over 12 years. Al-Miqdad responded to an official invitation by Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan, who invited him to hold talks on the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The trip to Saudi Arabia was preceded by a visit to the Egyptian capital, Cairo in early April, where he discussed with his counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, bilateral ties as well as regional and international developments.
Syrian-Algerian relations have been on the rise after Algeria pushed for Damascus’s representation in the Arab Summit, which was held last November. However, Syria expressed its unwillingness to resume its Arab League membership in a bid to ease tensions and unify the Arab front.
