Syrians aged 18 and above and holding an identity card are eligible to vote at some 8,150 polling stations.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cast his vote in the People’s Assembly elections for the legislative term at one of the polling stations in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Syria's Higher Judicial Committee for Elections announced on Monday that ballots have opened at all polling stations across Syrian provinces, allowing voters to select their candidates for the fourth legislative term of the People’s Assembly.
Syrians are participating in this election at 8,151 centers, where they will choose 250 parliament members from 1,516 candidates.
The elections are proceeding smoothly without any reported violations so far, Judge Jihad Murad, the chairman of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections, told Al Mayadeen.
He affirmed that the entire process is under judicial supervision and independent of both the executive and legislative authorities.
Polling stations, totaling 8,151, began receiving voters on Monday morning, Murad told Syria's state-run news agency SANA.
He emphasized that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the success of the election process.
Syrians aged 18 and over and holding an identity card are eligible to vote at some 8,150 polling stations.
Murad explained that once the ballot boxes are closed, the election committee will immediately start the vote-counting process at the polling station, in the presence of the candidate or their representative, as well as the media.
The Syrian official added that the final results will be announced by the Supreme Judicial Elections Committee as soon as the vote counting is complete.
Polls opened at 7:00 am local time and are set to close at 7:00 pm, but the Higher Elections Committee may extend the election period by up to five hours at all polling stations if needed.
