Taliban Arrest Mass Human Trafficker in Afghanistan
The Taliban arrest a man accused of selling dozens of women in northern Afghanistan.
A human trafficker was arrested by the Taliban today, according to Afghan officials. The man allegedly sold dozens of women in northern Afghanistan, duping them into believing they would be marrying into money, with promises of an easy life.
The trafficker was arrested in Jowzjan province late on Monday, Damullah Seraj, the Afghan provincial police chief, told reporters.
"We are still in our initial stages of the investigation. We hope to find out more about this case later," he said.
Mohammad Sardar Mubariz, a district police chief in Jawzjan, said that the man would target poor women desperate to improve their circumstances.
After promising he would find them a wealthy husband, he would move them to a different province where they were instead sold into servitude, and managed to dupe around 130 women this way.
The Taliban is cracking down on drug and human trafficking, in an attempt to provide more stability to Afghans following the decades-long war the US waged on the country. They have been especially focused on containing robbery and kidnappings in Afghanistan's larger cities.
