Trump considers ex-intelligence chief Richard Grenell for Ukraine post
Beyond his role as ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as a special presidential envoy for peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
US President-elect Donald Trump is contemplating appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Reuters reported, citing four sources familiar with the transition process.
Grenell, who previously served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence during his 2017-2021 term, would take on a pivotal role in Trump's efforts to end the war, should he be chosen for the position, the news agency emphasized.
Although there is no current special envoy dedicated to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump is considering establishing the role, according to the four sources who spoke anonymously about internal discussions.
But the sources also said that while Trump is seriously considering the creation of a special envoy position, he may ultimately decide against it. They also pointed out that if the role is created, he could choose someone else, and there is no certainty that Grenell would accept the position.
Trump vowed on the campaign trail to swiftly end the conflict, although he has not said how he will do it.
Reuters highlighted that some of Grenell's stances could give Ukraine's leaders pause.
In a Bloomberg roundtable in July, Grenell proposed the creation of "autonomous zones" as a potential solution to the Ukraine conflict. He also expressed opposition to Kiev joining NATO shortly, aligning with the views of many Trump allies.
Supporters of Grenell highlight his extensive diplomatic career and profound expertise in European affairs. Beyond his role as ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as a special presidential envoy for peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
A key figure in Trump's campaign ahead of the November 5 election, Grenell was considered a leading candidate for secretary of state. However, he was ultimately passed over in favor of Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a decision that surprised and disappointed some of Grenell's close allies, the news agency said.
With Republican control of the Senate, his confirmation in this position would likely face little opposition, according to Axios.
Other candidates for Secretary of State include Senator Bill Hagerty, who served as Ambassador to Japan during Trump's first term, and Robert O'Brien, Trump's former national security advisor.
Former State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus is also mentioned for a senior role, while Representative Elise Stefanik is seen as a top contender for US Ambassador to the United Nations.
