Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call with US President Donald Trump earlier on Thursday, a conversation that took place at the request of the United States, according to a statement by the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
The embassy confirmed the exchange via its official account on X, stating: "Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday held phone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the latter's request."
China Central Television (CCTV), the state broadcaster, reported on the call but did not reveal any details regarding the content or topics discussed during the conversation.
The high-level dialogue comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing over a range of issues, though the embassy’s statement focused solely on the procedural nature of the call.
Xi Urges US to lift sanctions, calls for Deeper cooperation
In detail, during the call, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the United States to adopt a more realistic stance on the progress achieved in bilateral negotiations and to remove punitive measures imposed on China. The remarks were made during a phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, according to Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV).
"After the Geneva talks, China has seriously and faithfully implemented the agreement. The United States should be realistic about the progress made and cancel the negative measures imposed on China," Xi stated.
The two leaders also discussed plans for future visits, with Xi extending an invitation to Trump to visit China. In response, Trump expressed gratitude and confirmed that he and First Lady Melania Trump have accepted the invitation. Trump added that President Xi and the First Lady of China are also expected to make a reciprocal visit to the United States.
"I’ll be going there with the First Lady at a certain point, and he [Xi Jinping] will be coming here, hopefully with the First Lady of China," Trump told reporters at the White House.
During the call, Xi emphasized the need for strengthened engagement across multiple sectors, including trade, diplomacy, the military, and law enforcement. "Both sides should strengthen contacts in various fields... promote consensus, reduce misunderstandings, and strengthen cooperation," Xi said.
The Chinese leader also cautioned the United States about the Taiwan issue, urging Washington to act with care and avoid actions that could embolden pro-independence forces and potentially lead to conflict between the two nations.
The phone call comes amid heightened tensions and renewed interest in stabilizing U.S.-China relations, which have experienced strain over trade disputes, military tensions in the Indo-Pacific, and the Taiwan Strait crisis.
