Trump thinks this witch hunt is all about "election interference and a complete and total political weaponization of law enforcement."

Former US President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that he had received a letter from prosecutors indicating that he is likely to be criminally indicted in connection with the violence at the US Capitol on January 6.

On Trump's Truth Social platform, he wrote that "Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden's DOJ, sent a letter... stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6 Grand Jury investigation."

The President, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, claimed that he received the letter on Sunday and had "a very short four days" to report to a grand jury, "which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment."

"This witch hunt is all about election interference and a complete and total political weaponization of law enforcement," Trump said. "It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!"

The special counsel, Jack Smith, has already filed charges against the 77-year-old Trump for improper handling of top-secret federal records after leaving the White House.

The indictment claims that Trump stored the materials at his Florida mansion Mar-a-Lago, which contained confidential documents from the Pentagon, CIA, and National Security Agency.

Later on Tuesday, the judge overseeing the documents case will have a hearing to determine the start date for the trial.

While Trump's defense team requested that it begin after the November 2024 presidential election, prosecutors requested that it begin in December.

Several probes

Smith has also looked into Trump's attempts to have the results of the 2020 election annulled, as well as the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by Trump supporters who wanted to prevent congressional certification of Biden's victory.

Prosecutors in Georgia are also looking into possible unlawful efforts by Trump to rig Georgia's 2020 presidential election.

Trump said in his post on Truth Social that he has "the right to protest an Election that I am fully convinced was Rigged and Stolen" and claimed that he is being targeted due to the approaching election.

The Justice Department has "effectively issued a third indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden's NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency," he said, adding that "nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close."

The Washington Post claimed that a target letter does not always imply that the recipient will face prosecution. Trump did not name any specific allegations against him in his Truth Social post.
