Trump signs executive order to halt illegal immigration through south
US President Donald Trump signs an executive order to limit illegal immigration through the southern US border amid a crisis facing the country.
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at preventing the physical entry of illegal immigrants through the southern border, the White House announced on Wednesday.
"Today, President Trump signed an Executive Order that suspends the physical entry of aliens engaged in an invasion of the United States through the southern border," the White House press release stated.
The order directs the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the Department of State to take immediate action to "repel, repatriate, and remove illegal aliens" attempting to cross into the US through its southern border.
The move underscores the Trump administration's firm stance on immigration. While specific measures were not detailed in the press release, the order signals an escalation in federal efforts to address what the administration has described as a crisis at the border.
Reuters reported on Monday that Donald Trump’s incoming US presidential administration intends to significantly intensify immigration enforcement nationwide shortly after his inauguration.
"We’re going to be doing operations all across the country," the source told Reuters on Friday. "You’re going to see arrests in New York. You’re going to see arrests in Miami."
The remarks followed a report by The Wall Street Journal indicating that the administration plans to launch a major immigration raid in Chicago on Tuesday.
The report, citing four individuals familiar with the plans, stated that the operation in Chicago would span the entire week, with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deploying between 100 and 200 officers to execute the effort.
Immigration was a central issue in Trump’s campaign leading up to the November 5 presidential election.
"Within moments of my inauguration, we will begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history," Trump declared in January 2024.
According to previous reports by Reuters, Trump is expected to mobilize government agencies nationwide to achieve record deportation numbers, building on his first-term efforts to leverage all available resources and pressure so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions into compliance.
