The state information website Turkmenistan - Golden Age reported on Thursday that the nations of Turkmenistan and Iraq convened to discuss organizing the swap supplies of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Iraq through Iran.

The discussion occurred during talks in Ashgabat between representatives of the Turkmengas state concern and an Iraqi delegation.

"The sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation in such an important area as the fuel and energy sector. Particular attention was paid to swapping supplies of Turkmen natural gas to Iraq through the Islamic Republic of Iran," as stated by the website.

On the other hand, Iran and Turkmenistan have signed a 20-year cooperation agreement as of June 2022.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi stated at a joint press conference with his Turkmen counterpart that "there are good capacities and areas in the two countries to expand cooperation beyond the current level in the fields of economy, trade, water, electricity, and gas. The agreements and memorandums of understanding signed today by the two countries have the potential to elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level."

Since March, Iraq has been looking to purchase more gas from Iran. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity was ready to sign an agreement with Iran to buy the required amount of gas for the summer season, which will add to Iraq's supply of 7,000 megawatts of electricity, as per Baghdad.

Natural gas is already being supplied by Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iran under an organized swap as well.
