UK FM: NATO has not done enough in last 15 years
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss calls for strengthening the North Atlantic military alliance.
In the aftermath of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Monday that NATO "has not done enough" in terms of spending, technological development, and security architecture over the last 15 years, calling for the North Atlantic military alliance to be strengthened.
At a parliamentary committee, Truss added, “I am making the point that over the last 15 years it is clear NATO has not done enough. That’s not just in terms of spending, that’s also in terms of technological development and it’s also in terms of the security architecture."
Western allies, according to the head of UK diplomacy, should strengthen NATO, particularly on the Eastern flank.
Furthermore, she said that "we have to be very serious about defense spending across NATO," claiming that Russia's military operation in Ukraine "has shattered" Europe's security architecture.
"If we don’t stop (Russian President Vladimir) Putin in Ukraine, of course, it’d be devastating for the European security but it would also send a signal to aggressors elsewhere around the world," Truss added.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to demilitarize and "denazify" Ukraine in response to DPR and LPR calls for assistance in countering Ukrainian troop aggression. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the special operation is only targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure and poses no threat to civilians. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it has no intention of occupying Ukraine.
