Ukraine has taken responsibility for naval drone attacks on two commercial tankers in the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey, according to The Guardian, citing a Ukrainian intelligence source.
An investigation has been underway into the recent Black Sea tanker attacks that targeted two oil vessels, Kairos and Virat, in what Russian diplomatic sources condemned as acts of external interference threatening regional maritime security.
Russian diplomatic sources in Istanbul confirmed that authorities were working to uncover all individuals and entities involved in the incidents, which took place off the coast of Turkey.
On Friday, the oil tanker Kairos caught fire approximately 28 nautical miles from Turkey’s shoreline. Preliminary findings suggest an act of external interference caused the fire.
All 25 crew members were safely evacuated. Shortly after, another vessel—the Virat—was reportedly struck 35 miles offshore. Despite the damage, its 20 crew members remained on board. On Saturday, the Virat was reportedly targeted again by Ukrainian unmanned naval boats.
Maritime and environmental concerns raised
Commenting on the attacks, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of escalating tensions in the Black Sea and disrupting peace efforts, stating: “The same forces that once obstructed settlement talks are now pushing for renewed conflict.”
Turkey expressed concern over the attacks, warning of risks to human life, maritime security, and the environment. A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that Ankara is in contact with relevant parties to prevent further escalation and protect Turkey’s regional and economic interests.
Russian authorities are in active contact with their Turkish counterparts, and Russian diplomatic missions in Turkey are closely involved in the process.
