Amid Ukraine's recent attack on the Kerch bridge and Moscow's withdrawal from the region of Kherson, Russia has been increasing the shelling of Ukraine's power infrastructure.
On November 18, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that about half of Ukraine's energy grid has been out of order due to Russia's missile strikes - three days after Moscow initiated heavy strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
On November 25, Ukraine's electricity transmission system operator, Ukrenergo, reported a 30% electricity deficit.
On November 29, the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that State Department will be funding Ukraine with $53 million to support the acquisition of vital electric materials and equipment for its national power grid.
On December 7, Zelensky said it was currently impossible to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
“Energy sector is a permanent item on our agenda – both at the staff and government levels. I’ve also held a meeting on the stabilization of the energy system and protection of our power plants. We are constantly increasing the generation and supply of electricity – we are adding more volume almost every day. But we should not forget – and everyone should not forget – that it is now impossible to restore 100% of the energy system as it was… We need time. That is why shutdown schedules remain in most cities and districts,” Zelensky said in a video address on Telegram.
