Ukraine's interior minister dies in Brovary

Ukraine Police reported that the Interior Minister and his first deputy died in the helicopter crash in Brovary City.

The death toll in a helicopter crash in the Ukrainian city of Brovary has risen to 18, including three children, with 29 people injured, including 15 children, the chief of the Kiev regional military administration, Oleksiy Kuleba reported.

Earlier, a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten and residential buildings in Brovary. The kindergarten's students and employees were evacuated.  Sixteen people, including two children, were killed in the helicopter crash and 9 of them were on board the helicopter, according to initial reports.

"The tragedy in Brovary. The death toll has increased. As of 10:30 [08:30 GMT], 18 have died, including three children. It is known about 29 injured, including 15 children," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Simultaneously, Ukraine Police reported that the Interior Minister and his first deputy died in the helicopter crash in Brovary City.

"This morning, on January 18, a helicopter of the State Emergency Service crashed in Brovary. As a result of the crash, the management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was killed: the minister, a first deputy minister, and the secretary of state," the police said.

The Interior Ministry of Ukraine identified chopper malfunction, infringement of safety norms, and sabotage as possible causes of the tragedy. In turn, military authorities stated that the inquiry would take several weeks.

The helicopter that crashed was a Eurocopter EC225 "Super Puma", CNN reported, adding that the Eurocopter EC225 is a civilian transport helicopter with a range of up to 24 miles.
