The Washington Post reported on Saturday that Ukrainian residents were dying in large numbers in the hostilities, citing witnesses from the Lviv region which is home to some of Ukraine's most far-right movements.

The head of the local administration, Petro Sokolovsky, told the newspaper that around 600 locals out of 18,500 residents from the town of Novy Yarichiv in the Lvov region are taking part in the military conflict.

One school director from the village of Neslukhiv, Oksana Servylo, said that "Every day they bring more dead back from Bakhmut," adding that "young men are dying — very young men."

In other news, several protest actions have taken place over the past months by widows of deceased Ukrainian soldiers and wives of prisoners of war from the Lvov 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

They are called the "Maiden of widows" and their most recent protest took place on January 14 in Kiev.

The Ukrainian government has refused to acknowledge their losses and also refused to pay compensation to their families - something that is likely to raise resentment towards the authorities in Kiev.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Russia gained control of the city of Soledar which has opened the strategically important area of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

DPR acting head Denis Pushilin has underscored that the relevance of this gain lies in that it may push for further control of the entire territory of the DPR from Ukraine.
