US Congressman under investigation for foreign 'favors'
US authorities are searching for records of any service, work, or favors the Congressman or his wife may have done on behalf of foreign officials and companies or US businesses.
US authorities are seeking records from Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar concerning US businesses and organizations with foreign ties, many of which are linked to Azerbaijan, according to ABC News.
As part of the federal investigation, the FBI raided the Congressman's home and campaign office in Texas earlier this week.
According to the report, which cited a copy of the subpoena, the US grand jury's investigation is looking for records on the Congressman, his wife Imelda Cuellar, and one of his campaign staffers.
The investigation appears to be focused on three Texas-based companies seemingly overseen by Imelda Cuellar. The report further reveals that the investigation is also looking for records on any US logistics firms and cultural advocacy organizations with ties to Azerbaijan.
According to the subpoena, US authorities are specifically looking for records revealing "anything of value" that Congressman Henry Cuellar, his wife, or others close to them may have received from foreign officials or business leaders, in addition to records of any service, work, or favors the congressman or his wife may have performed on behalf of foreign officials and companies, as well as US businesses, in return.
Henry Cuellar, who has been a member of Congress since 2005, previously served as a co-chair of the Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus and met with Azerbaijan officials, including Ambassador Elin Suleymanov, the report stated, adding that his office said the congressman will fully cooperate in any investigation.
