US designates right-wing Terrorgram network as 'terrorist' group
The US Department of State has designated the white supremacist group 'The Terrorgram Collective' on Telegram as a global "terror group".
The US imposed sanctions on the "Terrorgram" collective on Monday, designating it a "terrorist group" for promoting violent white supremacy.
The US State Department designated the "Terrorgram" group, which operates on Telegram, and three of its leaders as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
The State Department said the group has inspired and facilitated attacks, including a 2022 shooting at a bar in Slovakia, a planned 2024 attack on New Jersey energy facilities, and an August knife attack at a mosque in Turkiye.
The State Department said, "The group promotes violent white supremacism, solicits attacks on perceived adversaries, and provides guidance and instructional materials on tactics, methods, and targets for attacks, including on critical infrastructure and government officials."
The action freezes the group's US assets and prohibits Americans from engaging with it.
On Monday, officials based in Brazil, Croatia, and South Africa were targeted with sanctions, according to the statement.
In September, US prosecutors charged two alleged leaders of the group, accusing them of using Telegram to incite attacks on citizens and immigrants to provoke a race war.
In April, Britain announced it would proscribe the Terrorgram collective as a "terrorist organization", making it a criminal offense to belong to or promote the group.
In 2021, Biden launched the first-ever US National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism, providing resources to identify and prosecute threats and measures to prevent Americans from joining dangerous groups.
