In a statement to Al Mayadeen, US National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes asserted, "The proposed plan for Gaza's reconstruction overlooks the stark reality of its uninhabitable conditions."
Hughes further emphasized, "The proposal fails to acknowledge that residents cannot live with dignity in a landscape buried under debris and riddled with unexploded ordnance."
He also affirmed that US President Donald Trump remains committed to his vision of rebuilding Gaza without Hamas.
Arab Summit adopts Egypt's reconstruction plan for Gaza
The emergency Arab summit held in Cairo on Tuesday adopted Egypt’s plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and a political resolution to the ongoing crisis.
In its final statement, the summit reaffirmed the priority of achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, acknowledging the significant challenges facing its implementation. The statement also rejected any forced displacement of Palestinians and reiterated support for a two-state solution.
The Arab leaders discussed the establishment of a new security and political framework for Gaza, calling on the UN Security Council to deploy international peacekeeping forces in both the West Bank and Gaza.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced the adoption of the summit’s final statement, as well as Egypt’s plan for the reconstruction and development of Gaza.
Trump says Gaza ethnic cleansing plan good
Late last month, Trump reiterated on February 2021 his support for his controversial proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, claiming it "really works" but insisting he would not impose it.
"I'll tell you the way to do it, it is my plan. I think that's the plan that really works. But I'm not forcing it. I'm just going to sit back and recommend it," Trump said in an interview with Fox News Radio's Brian Kilmeade.
Trump also expressed surprise at Jordan and Egypt's opposition to his plan, remarking, "We pay Jordan and Egypt billions of dollars a year, and I was a little surprised they'd say that."
He further claimed that if the people of Gaza were given the choice between remaining in the besieged territory or relocating, they would opt to leave.
"It's a great location," Trump said of Gaza, before questioning why the Israeli occupation withdrew from it. "I don't know why Israel ever gave that up. Why did they give it up?"
