US sanctions 7 Russians, 1 entity over Moldova elections
The Treasury Department claims some of the targeted Russian citizens still allegedly "maintain ties to Russian intelligence services."
The United States Treasury Department confirmed on Monday that it imposed sanctions against an entity as well as members of a group it claimed is connected to Russian intelligence for their part in allegedly influencing the outcome of Moldova’s elections.
In a statement, the Treasury Department said that the new sanctions target seven Russian citizens, some of whom still allegedly "maintain ties to Russian intelligence services."
The statement claimed that the sanctioned Russian citizens "are part of a large global information operation connected to the Russian Federation that targets Ukraine, countries bordering Ukraine including Moldova, Balkan countries, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States."
"These actors provoked, trained, and oversaw groups in democratic countries that conduct anti-government protests, rallies, marches, and demonstrations," the Treasury Department alleged.
