Where did all the money go!? Ukraine begs for blankets
The mayor of Kiev urges the West to expedite funding despite non-stop billions of dollars in supplies to Ukraine.
Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said, as quoted by the Telegraph, that if the West does not immediately send blankets and generators to keep the Ukrainian people warm, they will freeze to death this winter.
“This winter will definitely be a huge challenge for us,” he added.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he did acknowledge that as winter approaches, they are still preparing for a "worst-case scenario”.
This comes shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the power cuts following the Russian strikes on Ukraine's power grids have been affecting nearly 4 million Ukrainians.
Following the attack on the Crimean bridge, which Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out, Russia carried out strikes against infrastructure across Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened that Russia's response to any further Ukrainian attacks would be "severe" after he announced the strikes, adding that new intense bombing was not necessary "at the moment".
Addressing the post-strike power outages, Ukrenergo (Ukraine's national energy company) stated that Kiev's energy infrastructure has been damaged due to the missile attack. Residents across Ukrainian cities were told to cut down on electricity consumption for the time being.
Where did all the money go?
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the US has reportedly supplied Kiev with $15.2 billion in weapon supplies. Meanwhile, Europe spent around ($3.1 billion vs. €3.1 billion) in military supplies. The EU also claimed that it has also sent funding for non-military assistance and humanitarian aid.
However, the situation on the ground tells a different story, as Ukraine is begging for blankets "to protect its citizens from cold winter". In the upcoming days, Ukraine's nighttime temperatures are predicted to plummet, with some regions experiencing lows of -20C. Surprisingly, one thousand mobile heating points have been set up in Kiev by Klitschko and his team after they were successful in purchasing generators that provide enough electricity for Ukrainian troops in Kiev.
A question raised itself: Where did all the money go and is there another big black hole for humanitarian supplies?
