Yaël Braun-Pivet elected president of French National Assembly
Yaël Braun-Pivet wins a second term as president of the French National Assembly after forming a temporary alliance with right-wing deputies to secure her re-election and defeat left-wing candidate André Chassin.
Yaël Braun-Pivet, a member of the centrist bloc led by French President Emmanuel Macron, has been re-elected as president of the French National Assembly for a second five-year term. She won with a majority of 220 votes against André Chassin, who received 207 votes.
French media reported that Macron's party managed to form a temporary coalition, described as a "last-minute coalition," with centrist and right-leaning lawmakers to secure Braun-Pivet's re-election and defeat the left-wing Chassin.
Braun-Pivet secured her victory in the third round after the center-right withdrew their candidate following the first round of voting. She won after receiving support from independent deputies, following two inconclusive rounds of voting.
French media noted that the Macron and French conservative blocs are unlikely to continue their partnership, as conservatives refused to form a direct coalition with Macron's bloc.
These results drive Macron's bloc to call for a "government leader from their ranks" following Braun-Pivet's win, suggesting that their bloc holds a majority in the National Assembly.
The assembly is meeting for the first time since the early legislative elections held this month, where the New National Party unexpectedly secured the top spot, surpassing Macron's bloc and the right-wing led by Marine Le Pen.
