Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described his meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the Vatican as their best, highlighting a productive discussion focused on air defense systems and sanctions on Russia.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral, where, according to remarks shared by the Ukrainian presidential administration, Zelensky raised the issue of sanctions during their brief but meaningful exchange.
According to Zelensky, Trump’s response to the sanctions topic was "very strong," although no specific measures were disclosed.
Zelensky also revealed that he and Trump agreed on the need for a 30-day ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow, calling it a necessary first step toward ending the war. Ukraine has repeatedly called for an immediate, unconditional truce, while Russia has proposed a limited three-day ceasefire around May 9.
In response to the Russian offer, Zelensky said he was open to it only if the truce would last 30 days, not three.
US-Ukraine critical minerals deal aims to boost defense
The two leaders also discussed the new bilateral critical minerals deal, which was signed on Wednesday. Promoted heavily by Trump, the agreement provides the United States with preferential access to Ukrainian mineral projects and opens the door for US investment in reconstruction.
Zelensky described the deal as mutually beneficial, noting that it “would allow Ukraine to defend future US investments, as well as its own territory and people.”
On security, Zelensky underscored Kiev's urgent request for advanced air defense systems. He said these systems could be integrated into the framework of the new cooperation fund with Washington.
"And so we are ready for air defence systems to be a contribution (to the fund). I told him about the number (of systems that we need) – he told me that they will work on it, (that) these things are not free," Zelensky stated.
As Russia prepares for its annual May 9 celebrations marking victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, Zelensky cautioned that Ukraine could not guarantee the safety of any foreign dignitaries attending events in Moscow amid the ongoing war.
"We cannot be responsible for what happens on the territory of the Russian Federation. They are responsible for your security, and therefore, we will not give you any guarantees," he said.
