PSG coach Christophe Galtier taken into police custody
The coach has been taken into custody following accusations of discrimination at the former Nice club.
Police have detained Paris Saint-Germanin coach Christopher Galtier as part of a French inquiry into charges of discrimination at his former club Nice.
The lead detectives in his investigation have called in question Galtier who is still under contract at Parc des Princes for the time being.
His son, John Valovic-Galtier, has also been arrested, with authorities having 24 hours to formalize charges, arrest individuals involved, or release them.
The claims against the PSG president concern "discrimination based on an alleged race or membership of a religion."
Galtier is accused of making discriminatory, racist, and Islamophobic statements during his brief tenure as Nice manager in 2021-22.
In a statement, his lawyer expressed that Galtier was "amazed to learn of the insulting and defamatory remarks of Mr. Julien Fournier against him. Given the seriousness of the charges against him, which he disputes with the greatest firmness, Christophe Galtier immediately seized his lawyer... to initiate, without delay, the necessary legal proceedings which are necessary.”
As part of the inquiry, searches were conducted at the offices of Ligue 1 club Nice.
Several players and notable off-field individuals, including club president Jean-Pierre Rivere, have been interrogated as part of that process.
The appropriate authorities have also interviewed former football director Julian Fournier, who brought the charges to light in an alleged leaked email.
Galtier is now waiting to see whether any more action would be taken, while PSG is preparing to terminate his contract early in the event of another title success in 2022-23, with former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique being lined up to succeed him.
