China's 5G tech makes Beijing Olympic event 'real smart one'
China adopted a 5G technology in the ongoing Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, for the first time ever with full 5G coverage.
China's 5G technology has been adopted in the ongoing Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, for the first time ever Winter Olympics with full 5G coverage.
The technology will allow broadcasting services and real-time weather forecasts, timing and scoring during events, as well as transportation and medical services.
In a recent interview with the Global Times, the deputy manager of China Unicom Beijing Wang Chuanbao said, "I think that one of the biggest highlights of high technologies during the Games is the full coverage of 5G signals. Using this breakthrough, we have 19 innovative application scenarios, making the event a real smart one."
China Unicom is the official telecommunication services partner for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
China has set up a total of 1.43 million #5G base stations as of the end of 2021, accounting for over 60% of the global total. There are 10.1 5G base stations serving every 10,000 people in the country, nearly doubling from the end of 2020, said MIIT. pic.twitter.com/6Goctvb5kI

The 5G technology at the Beijing Games is a cloud-based broadcast technology and will enable people to enjoy the events at the same time, anytime and anywhere, as the COVID-19 still prevents potential audiences from attending.
The essence of the technology lies in cloud-based broadcasting concentrated in a 5G backpack, which is able to follow on-camera reporters and collect on-site scenes, which provides a real-time transmission, Wang said.
As for medical services, the 5G smart ambulance has data collection equipment such as cameras and emergency gateways. The medical staff on the ambulance can transmit relevant data to the emergency center via the 5G emergency gateway, realizing real-time data exchange and sharing.
With 5G technologies, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-speed Railway, the first smart high-speed rail fully covered by a 5G network, can create live streaming videos from a bullet train moving at 350 kilometers per hour.
"All the innovative applications are actually active exploration in 'no man's land'. They were initially aimed at ensuring the Winter Olympics' smooth operations. But I think all of the Olympic legacies will be applied in people's daily lives in the future," Wang said.
China expects to see an increasing number of 5G to 560 million users by the year 2023
The opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics began last Friday, with the Chinese capital becoming the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Olympics.
President Xi Jinping will be joined by more than 20 international leaders, including his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, to officially start the Games.
The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are among the countries boycotting the Olympics due to allegations about China's human rights record, which China responded to by stressing that "the Winter Olympics are not a stage for political shows and political manipulation," he added, accusing the US of "actions that interfere in and undermine the Beijing Winter Olympics."
Chinese state media reported late last month that the United States intends to "maliciously disrupt and spoil" the Beijing Winter Olympics by enticing athletes to compete half-heartedly and to criticize Beijing.
A week before the Games, amid tensions between the two, China Daily quoted unnamed sources saying that US "anti-China forces" sought to disrupt the Games and politicize sports.
