Tech mastermind and Tesla CEO Elon Musk voiced his encouragement for regulatory oversight on artificial intelligence (AI) with world leaders, including China, on Wednesday during an interview on Twitter Spaces.

"I'm an advocate of having some sort of regulatory oversight, I've actually made this point throughout the world meeting with world leaders including in China," Musk said, adding his belief that China is interested in an international framework regarding AI regulation, based on his understanding from discussions in the Asian nation.

Just a day before on Tuesday, US senators were handed a classified briefing from Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, and other AI experts from US defense and intelligence agencies in an attempt to comprehend the way in which congressional oversight could be both responsible and effective, according to Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In a surprise announcement, Musk declared on Wednesday the launching of a new group called xAI aimed at studying and examining the nature of reality.

Per the launch statement, the xAI team will be led by Musk and will involve participants with experience at artificial intelligence firms and start-ups like DeepMind and OpenAI.

The statement confirmed that the team has already worked on projects such as Google’s Minerva language model and OpenAi’s ChatGPT models.

Musk, however, claimed it will be a while until xAI will match the scale of Microsoft AI or Google DeepMind AI.

Back in May, Musk met with Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Beijing, as he kicked off his first visit to China in more than three years.

China is the world's largest market for electric vehicles, and Tesla indicated in April that it will construct a second enormous facility in Shanghai - a move showing adamance by Musk to build long-term ties with China in the tech world.

State-run Chinese news agency Xinhua specified that the new factory, which will have an initial capacity of 10,000 Megapack units per year, is expected to "start production in the second quarter of 2024."

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Mao Ning, affirmed that Beijing welcomed visits by international executives "to better understand China and promote mutually beneficial cooperation."
