Tesla recalls 675,000 cars from US, China
Regulators in China announced that almost 200,000 Tesla cars were recalled on Friday, a few hours after 475,000 Tesla vehicles were recalled in the United States.
Tesla has recalled 675,000 cars in the United States and China, prompting new questions about how safe the vehicles are.
The issues addressed in the recall are in the trunk and the front hood of two Tesla models - Model 3 and Model S.
On Friday, regulators in China announced that almost 200,000 Tesla cars were recalled, a few hours after 475,000 Tesla vehicles were recalled in the United States.
Driving the two models poses danger to drivers, as the trunk and hood increase the risk of crashes, according to US and Chinese regulators.
The repeated opening and closing of the trunk of the Model 3 can damage a cable for the rearview camera. As for Model S, the latch assembly has been experiencing issues that cause it to open without warning, obstructing the driver's ability to see.
According to Tesla estimates, problems with Model 3 affect 1% of the model, while problems with Model S affect 14% of the models which were recalled in the United States, without causing accidents as of now.
"It is a reality wake-up call for Tesla though, with a slap in the face welcome to the automotive world that is perhaps more complex than the smartphone industry that many like to compare it to," said German auto analyst Matthias Schmidt.
"After all, a dysfunctional car on four wheels can do a lot more potential damage than a dysfunctional iPhone," Schmidt said.
