European leaders, Zelensky, agree on full unconditional ceasefire, warn Putin of sanctions
Ukraine and key European leaders announced on Saturday, May 10, a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire set to begin May 12, with the backing of US President Donald Trump. The leaders warned that if Russia’s President Vladimir Putin refuses to comply, "massive" new sanctions will follow. Zelensky emphasized the need to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and proposed a “contingent of support” as a central pillar of future security guarantees. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said the Ukraine-Russia ceasefire would be monitored primarily by the US, with Europe also contributing.
