Gaza family spends 530+ days searching rubble for children’s bodies

"We are working with our hands and simple equipment" - Abu Muhammad Ishtawi describes how his family has spent 530+ days manually excavating rubble to find the bodies of 10 family members killed in an Israeli airstrike on December 5, 2023. With civil defense teams targeted and heavy machinery blocked from Gaza, families are forced to dig with their bare hands, often getting injured in the process. The Ishtawi family has recovered 9 bodies so far, with one still missing.
