Venezuela enters electoral silence: Latest updates on Venezuela's presidential elections
As Venezuela gears up for the presidential election on Sunday, July 28, 2024, incumbent President Nicolas Maduro and his main contender, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, have concluded their campaigns. President Nicolas Maduro, seeking a third term, addressed supporters on Thursday from a large stage set up on one of the city’s main roads. His speech, punctuated by musical intermissions and dancing, energized the crowd. Speaking from Plaza Bolívar, Maduro declared that the far-right would be defeated on Sunday and pledged to initiate a national dialogue among all Venezuelan parties, free from foreign interference. Meanwhile, Urrutia navigated through the crowd atop a platform mounted on a truck in Caracas. Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Venezuela, Siraj Ghassani, reported that Urrutia promised a new era for Venezuelans, marked by love replacing hatred, progress over poverty, and honesty over corruption.
