US President Donald Trump has publicly called for the dismissal of NBC late-night host Seth Meyers, following sharp criticism directed at him during a recent broadcast. Writing on Truth Social, Trump accused Meyers of being in a state of “uncontrollable rage” and claimed the host was suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
"NBC’s Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage, likely due to the fact that his 'show' is a Ratings DISASTER. Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!" Trump wrote.
During his Saturday night broadcast, Meyers described Trump as "the most unpopular president in US history," noting that even some of the former president's closest allies had started to distance themselves from him.
The on-air remarks come amid increased scrutiny of Trump's relationship with media figures and networks critical of his political record.
Media pressure resurfaces amid Jimmy Kimmel suspension
The latest controversy follows a similar case involving ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, who was temporarily suspended after criticizing Trump. The decision drew widespread backlash, including from former President Barack Obama, who denounced what he described as political interference in media affairs.
After growing public pressure, Disney later announced Kimmel’s reinstatement and the return of his original show.
Amid these developments, Trump’s approval rating has dropped significantly. According to a recent Economist/YouGov poll, his net approval stands at just 18%, marking one of the steepest declines recorded for a US political figure in recent years.
The data reflects rising public dissatisfaction as Trump continues to position himself for a return to national politics while maintaining confrontational rhetoric against the press and his critics.
Trump brands media outlets critical of him as 'illegal', 'corrupt'
On a related note, earlier this year, Trump branded news outlets that cover him critically as "illegal" and "corrupt" during a speech on March 15.
Speaking at the Department of Justice, Trump said CNN, MSNBC, and other unspecified media outlets "literally write 97.6 percent bad about me," adding, "It has to stop. It has to be illegal."
Trump described those media outlets as "political arms of the Democrat party. And in my opinion they're really corrupt and they're illegal. What they do is illegal," emphasizing that the news outlets are "influencing judges and it's really changing law, and it just cannot be legal. I don't believe it's legal. And they do it in total coordination with each other."
The US president has repeatedly attacked the media since his first election to the presidency in 2016, calling journalists and media outlets he disapproves of as "fake news" and "enemies of the people," while his current presidency is marked by targeting mainstream media outlets with restrictions.
