Sources reported on Sunday that James Cameron's latest movie release 'Avatar: The Way of Water' has exceeded the $2 billion mark in global ticket sales, meaning the movie has officially reached the rank of the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time.
Cameron has already produced three other movies of the six-highest grossing movies of all time, namely 'Avatar,' 'Avengers: Endgame,' 'Titanic,' 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' and 'Avengers: Infinity War.'
With $598 million generated at the US box office and $1.4 billion generated overseas, 'The Way of Water' has also become the first movie to reach the groundbreaking milestone in pandemic times.
In the global market, the movie grossed $229 million, France $129 million, Germany $117 million, Korea $96 million, and the UK $81 million.

It reportedly did not play in Russia where the first Avatar movie grossed $116 million.
Japan ranked last with a turnout of $28 million, a staggering decrease compared to the first movie's $176 million haul.
This comes despite calls from Native Americans and other Indigenous groups to boycott of the movie over claims that the film is an attempt to whitewash colonialism.
Several critics argued the movie contains elements of cultural appropriation, and have established parallels between human marine characters in the movie with real-life colonizers.
