Horror film tops 'Avatar' in American theaters
The sci-fi CGI movie has now amassed around $636.4 million in domestic ticket sales and a global total of $2.17 billion
"Avatar: The Way of Water" was finally outranked as the number one bestseller in ticketing box offices this week in the US and Canada by Universal Studios' "Knock at the Cabin," by M. Night Shyamalan.
Universal's "Knock" made $14.2 million in two days. The production of the film has reportedly cost $20 million according to Exhibitor Relations.
The creepy thriller stars Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as a couple vacationing at a cabin with their two young children when a mystery man, played by Dave Bautista, knocks on their door and prophesizes an inevitable apocalypse unless the family pledges a very painful sacrifice to prevent it.
Another new movie, Paramount's "80 for Brady" also outranked "Avatar", making $12.5 million. The success of this film has been taken as an indicator of increasingly older audiences returning to theaters.
It stars a young adult group of friends -- starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field -- as they travel to watch all-time famous NFL quarterback Tom Brady play in the 2017 Super Bowl.
"Avatar: The Way of Water" has broken its seven-week streak of dominating the box office yielding $10.8 million to Disney and the 20th century, getting demoted to the third rank. The sci-fi CGI movie has now amassed around $636.4 million in domestic ticket sales and a global total of $2.17 billion.
