Cinema legend Gina Lollobrigida will be running for Italian election
Lollobrigida intends to run for September's Italian election as an independent candidate.
95-year-old Italian cinema legend Gina Lollobrigida announced Saturday that she will be running for September's Italian election as an independent candidate under a coalition newly formed in Italy called Sovereign and Popular Italy (ISP).
Lollobrigida will be representing the district of Latina, southern Rome.
The Euroskeptic ISP is backed by the Communist Party, Socialist Homeland, Civil Action, Ancora Italia, and Riconquistare Italy, and defines itself as “the only alternative to liberal warmongering and healthcare totalitarianism.” The coalition will have to garner 3% of the votes to be qualified to enter the Italian parliament.
The platform opposes increased military spending, economic globalization, rampant privatization and "health dictatorship," calling for the restoration of monetary sovereignty, denouncing the European Union as "nothing more than a branch office on Wall Street."
This would not be the first time Lollobrigida attempts to enter political life, running for European Parliament in 1999 on the Democratici ticket, gathering 10,000 votes but not enough for a victory.
She has acted in scores of films, bets known for 'Beat the Devil,' 'The World's Most Beautiful Girl,' 'Come September,' 'Bread, Love and Dreams,' and 'Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell.' She also worked as a photojournalist in the 70s, interviewing Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro, and also became an accomplished sculptor later on.
This news comes within the same timeframe when Italy's former premier, Silvio Berlusconi, announced last Wednesday that he hoped to return to Italy's parliament in September's elections, almost 10 years after his expulsion from political life for tax fraud conviction.
Last month, Berlusconi had a role in bringing down Prime Minister Mario Draghi by withdrawing his support, thus paving the way for his center-right Forza Italia party to return to power in September 25 elections. This comes as part of a right-wing coalition, led by Giorgia Meloni's fascist Brothers of Italy, which includes Matteo Salvini's anti-immigration League.
