The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially been the best-performing movie release of 2023, grossing $500 million.

The animated film, based on the popular Nintendo video game, was released shortly before Easter weekend and immediately earned $377 million in global box office sales and $204.6 million in domestic sales in its first few days. Only nine days after its debut, it exceeded the $500 million mark, making it the year's top film thus far.

According to a Deadline report, Super Mario Bros beat the record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made after the title formerly belonged to Warcraft and Detective Pikachu.

It is the 12th highest-grossing studio picture globally since 2019 and one of just 13 studio films to make more than $500 million since 2019.

The movie, starring Chris Pratt, has a 58% critic rating but a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where user evaluations are high.

L.A. Weekly critic Asher Luberto wrote, “Super Mario Bros. has been one of the most popular video games for nearly 40 years, and watching this joyous, colorful concoction it’s easy to see why."

The Observer's reviewer wrote that it was "the laziest possible version of a Mario movie, and for most viewers, young and old, that'll be totally acceptable."

Meanwhile, viewers praised it as ideal family entertainment that was devoid of mature undertones.
